6th March 2008

On the 6th March 2008, the New Zealand Racing Board Squad for the 2008 Tour to Queensland was announced. The selected squad was as follows:

(Captain) Brendan Popplewell
(Vice Captain) BJ Martin
(Tour Manager) Andy Newman
Andrew Swan
Andy Monk
Blair Nicholson
Brendon Woodhead
Brijesh John
Byron Mabbett
Craig Twiname
Roger Moore
Sam Kelly
Shayne Batcheler (replaced by Thad Taylor due to injury)
Steve Hunt

The tour came about as a result of a one-off game in March 2007 between the New Zealand Racing Board and their Queensland counterparts, UNiTAB. The NZRB won that 50 overs game by 4 runs and have been invited to Queenland for the return leg.

The squad have had to undertake several fund-raising activities in order to be able to afford to go to Brisbane. These have included a Sponsored 40 Kilometre walk, a Lawn Bowls evening, some Pub Games tournaments and even a spot of paid gardening for a local business, Carters Builders Merchants.

Once in Brisbane, the NZRB team will be playing in a 20:20 cricket tournament, featuring teams from Queensland (UNiTAB), Victoria and New South Wales (TABCorp).

The tour kicks off on the 27th of March against the home team, UNiTAB and will close with a grand final on the 30th March. Watch this space for details as we receive them.
